This week all the development boards and components arrived so I have been going over the schematics to help with the node design. I have also had a little play with the micro and made an LED flash.

This week I have been doing a bit of work on the schematic design and learning how to use Eagle CAD PCB designer. Also spent a bit of time going over opamp designs for the microphone. Tony and I have put placed orders for a couple of development boards, radio modules, and a range of sensors to help design the circuit and get some code developed to ease the burden down the line.

This week I was handed a couple of the Monash Smart Radio Packet nodes which I have taken inspiration from and changed my transceiver to a HopeRF RFM22B 434MHz module. This should simplify the board design and minimize bugs, while being a much more powerful transceiver with only slightly more power demands.

This week little progress has been made as I've been far too busy with assignments and tests.

Most of the major components have been decided but I'm still struggling to choose a micro. The transceiver will be a TI CC1101, TI TMP112 temperature sensor, Panasonic EKMB 6uA PIR motion detector, Knowles Acoustic SPM0404UD5 ultrasonic microphone, and a Freescale MMA8453Q accelerometer. The micro should have USB and a decent amount of RAM and flash so I've been looking at ARM Cortex-M0/M3, or a continuation of the current boards and use a TI MSP430 5 series.

This week I got halfway through my comparison spreadsheet before being sidetracked into analysing the current nodes circuit schematics and investigating motion sensors and ultrasonic microphones for use in the new board. I might have come to the conclusion that the transceivers I'm looking at are of the wrong frequency, 2.4GHz, and for more range I will instead be looking for ones at 900MHz.

Spent the week writing my proposal and doing readings. Hope to get my comparison spreadsheet finished this coming week.

This week was spent compiling a list of microcontrollers with integrated 802.15.4/ZigBee transceivers, and creating a spreadsheet view of the MCUs showing every possible feature in order to compare and filter to the MCU I will select as a project basis.
