Spent this week working on my monitoring system for WAND. Started to produce documentation on adding a server to icinga and cacti. Started working on a bash script that will eventually monitor all our RAIDs exposing its data to icinga over SNMP, in the process of writing it I found a few degraded RAID arrays, oops... Also worked on graphing io statistics with another script. Started to standardise everything so its easy to add new machines.

Also had 520 conference on Wednesday which was good to see the WAND talks finally after missing the practice, good work guys and good luck with writing your reports. Also attended Matthew's lectures as part of his job interviews which he pulled off well despite a few technicial difficulties, has increased the amount of time I have spent playing pacman recently.

Spent first half of week sick at home. Wednesday afternoon was spent running a photoshoot for lightwire which I really enjoyed taking photos for, had some great models and came out with some great shots at various locations.

Spent Thursday and Friday finishing the web interface for COMP518 which all works now and it's great to see some of the students have started their assignments.

Spent most of this week developing the web frontend for COMP518 cyber security assignments. It's coming along quite nicely and I'm attempting to keep it secure keeping in mind the target audience.

Since everyone was in Wellington this week I got to run the NZPC programming contest marking on Saturday. Took a bit to get my head around Judge Judy, but eventually got it all sorted.

Spent this week working on 518 cyber security stuff. Planning out the assignment we're going to set in a couple of weeks on snort. Have been continuing to build the frontend to libvirt for the students to use to get their virtual machines running.

Finished building the snort network for Andreas to use to give demonstrations to the class next week and it seems to be running quite nicely.

Have started working on building the virtual machine infrastructure for COMP518 (Cyber Security) this week. Started by deploying some VMs for Andreas to use for demonstrating how snort works.

I'll start next week writing a web frontend for libvirt that will let lecturers define an assignment and students to instantiate that assignment and work on it.

Last week was Oweek so I was helping out the WSU again running events which was good fun. At WAND I've started to package up bearwall which is the new firewall that will be deployed to all the WAND servers.

Warlock also decided to die twice this week, the first time after a DoS attack from Spain which hit resource intensive parts of websites warlock hosts, me and Jamie have since deployed an iptables rule to prevent this type of attack in the future.

The first half of the week was spent tidying up website and weekly report things and crossing things off my todo list which is getting quite short now which is nice, I also managed to not break Drupal this week which was nice.

Second half of the week was spent working with Jamie upgrading spectre and relic to Debian Squeeze. We also swapped the hardware of spectre and voodoo as voodoo was a little overspec'd which caused a bit of downtime for each. Upgrades were pretty successful and there were only a few minor issues which have been fixed. We also did an inventory of all the patch panels and cabling and Jamie went through and labeled all the switches in cacti and updated the cabling documentation.

I'm back after taking a break from WAND (only in working capacity, pretty sure I lived up here for a couple of weeks studying...) for exams and to work on some other projects.

Spent the end of this week fixing Drupal bugs, pretty sure I've got all the major ones worked out (no more denied access for anonymous users!) this of course broke other things in Drupal but I think I've managed to sort most of those out now. Also made a few changes to the weekly report system which should make Shane's job easier.

Had the last week of my contract this week before I can sign a new one in 3 weeks. Spent this week pushing lots of fixes live, mostly centred around the weekly report system which should work a bit better now (it even sends out emails every week).

Got study week next week and then 2 weeks of exams so probably won't be around too much until exams are over.

Managed to have a busy week this week with 5 unrelated software problems causing outages on different servers throughout the week that needed attention to fix. Erg was the first to die on Saturday which I brought back Monday morning followed by wagyu having a short outage on Tuesday. Warlock got into an unhappy state twice requiring a reboot to bring it back from the dead. Also the VPS hosting the KAREN wiki that I look after for REANNZ decided to go down as well on Thursday which came back after a fsck and a restart.

Looking forward to a "quiter" week next work catching up on uni assignments.
